Wild Turkey
Wild turkeys courtship begins in late March and early April. Females begin laying there eggs in mid -April. The eggs will hatch approximately 28 days later. Acorns are their main diet, so the oak crop has a significant impact on the turkey harvest. If we have a heavy mast, the turkeys don't have to move as much. So when you locate your flocks they tend to be larger than normal. A gobbler's beard grows throughout his whole life and usually grows 3 to 4 inches a year . The length of a adult tom's beard is determined by how much of the beard is dragging the ground, but are usually about 10 to 12 inches long. A jake's { juvenile} beard is commonly about 2 to 4 inches long the first year. Some hens have been known to have beards. It s not very common but it does happen. Most of our turkeys are commonly found in wooded areas, grassy fields, and creek bottoms . Turkeys are hunted in a variety of ways. Most commonly, you would use some kind of turkey call, box calls, slate calls, and the mouth call. The mouth call is a call made with a bow hunter in mind, due to the fact it leaves one's hand free to draw your bow while you're still able to call in your turkey. Turkeys don't have a great sense of smell or taste, but they do have excellent eye sight. The smallest of movements can make all the difference when it counts the most. Our turkey season here starts the last week of March, and goes to the end of April . The wild turkey population in Tennessee and North Carolina has improved greatly in the past 10 years . Due to conservation and habitat improvement, constant monitoring of the species, and their needs. The Wild Turkey Federation has worked with our local government agent to insure the well being, habitat, and conservation of our wild turkey for the future.
